Women in Science and Engineering is recruiting mentors for a newly funded program “An Innovative Hybrid Program for Diversifying and Building Stem and ICT Workforce” (iSTEM). This 3 year program will partner 60 mentors with 60 mentees who will learn together about various science, technology, engineering, and math topics. The mentees will be students in grades 3-5 attending Lawrence Intermediate School as well as students in grades 6-8 attending Valencia Middle School. Additionally, UA students can earn credit working as mentors through the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies.
To be a mentor you do not need to be an expert in science, technology, engineering, or math since the mentors and mentees will be “learning together”. The iSTEM program will provide activity kits for the in-school mentoring sessions and the field trips will be organized by the University of Arizona with transportation provided to and from the schools.
Those interested being a mentor will be expected to:
- Complete a mentor application and attend a 3 hour mentor orientation at the school (Lawrence or Hohokam),
- Be fingerprinted and have a background check as required by the State of Arizona to work with children,
- Partner with your mentee for at least one calendar year,
- Engage with your mentee at least twice a month at the school (usually at lunch hour) for a STEM-related mentor/mentee hands-on activity,
- Attend at least five field trips (generally 4 to 6 hours each scheduled for Saturdays, early-release school days, or school holidays) during the one year period, and
- Participate in the program evaluation by completing an annual survey about the iSTEM program.
Benefits of being an iSTEM mentor include (1) working with children who are enthusiastic about STEM, (2) participating in hand-on activities related to STEM (e.g. building solar robots, making water conservation equipment, using a telescope to learn about astronomy), (3) exploring for yourself STEM career opportunities, (4) fostering a healthy learning environment for children, and (5) opportunities (optional) for you to participate in additional trainings with regard to mentoring, working with youth, child development, utilizing one’s strengths, history and culture of the region, and other topics of interest.
