Name: Connor Young

Class Standing: Sophomore

Major: Aerospace Engineering

Dear SEDS,

It would give me no greater pleasure than to gain your approval as next year’s SEDS President. And while I’m no Elon Musk, my experience as a sophomore honorary vice president and co-chair of “Students Supporting Brain Tumor Research” have given me valuable insight into organizing clubs and the work it takes to get events accomplished. I may not have been as active as I would like this semester due to my class schedule, but that will not interfere next year. And though I may be relatively new to the club, I have made a point to immerse myself in its workings and get to know as many of you as possible. Another positive aspect is that I can bring a fresh, new perspective to the club. Being an aerospace engineering major gives me some background knowledge that will be helpful in many ways, such as the projects I would like to see SEDS get started on to involve students in hands-on experience. Overall, I’m an organized and responsible student with a passion for space, and through my strong work ethic I hope to grow and build this club to its full potential as a leading group in educating and involving students in space exploration.

Additionally, as President of my DECA (business and marketing club) chapter in high school I helped to grow our club from 30 members to over 140. This shows my ability to “get the word out” and shows why I would thoroughly enjoy being the Outreach officer. My experience marketing clubs to students coupled with my enthusiasm for involvement and club events proves to be a dynamic duo that would make me the Outreach officer SEDS deserves. With all the upcoming projects I hope the club chooses to pursue, more people will be essential and I am someone who can make that happen.

Thank you for your consideration,

Connor Young

Joel Mueting

Senior

AME and ISTA Double Major

Running for UASEDS President, and Treasurer

I have been an active member of SEDS for a little over two years. This past year I served as UASEDS Trip Coordinator. As such, I planned and orchestrated one of our largest trips to Space Vision last October, this year’s annual Spring Break trip in California, and various smaller events throughout the Fall and Spring semesters. Being trip coordinator has been a very rewarding experience and I look forward to applying the knowledge and skills I’ve learned toward a different officer position in UASEDS next year. My other management experience includes serving as the assistant Cadet Training Officer for the UofA’s Arnold Air Society squadron, a national organization affiliated with the U.S. Air Force ROTC program.

I intend to serve our SEDS chapter in one of two capacities, either as Treasurer or club President.

As Treasurer, I plan on formalizing the club’s finances and bookkeeping. I would like to maintain a clean and organized system for tracking all of the money that SEDS makes, is donated, and spends and ensure that the system is maintained and improved every year. The Treasurer officer position has been filled by very hardworking SEDS members in the past few years and I plan to uphold their work ethic and ensure the job is performed as well as it has been in the past.

If elected President, I have a number of exciting plans I’d like to implement to further improve UASEDS. First off, an important part of our club is community outreach. We are lucky to have a large group of members eager to fill the new Outreach officer position and assist in planning next year’s outreach projects. I think it would be beneficial to establish one or more annual outreach opportunities that we do on a reoccurring basis that are organized primarily by SEDS. For example, many of you participated in Yuri’s night this past week. This is an even that we participate in each Spring, but do not actually host. Creating a community outreach event that is hosted and organized by UASEDS each year would be a good way to give back to the community, recruit new members, and make our club more well known at the U of A.

Another very important segment of our club is the management of technical engineering projects. I intend to build up our current list of technical projects by adding a rocketry component. This would include a long-term goal of building a rocket engine from the ground up and many smaller scale projects of participating in local amateur rocket launches, facilitating members to obtain the proper licensure for amateur rocketry, and more. As president, I also intend to supply SEDS members with opportunities to get hands on learning from professionals such as taking the Physics dept.’s (seldom offered) five week machine shop course, electronics workshops offered at Tucson’s new hacker space, and hopefully even a class on welding. These types of skills are invaluable to those members that are engineering students (and really anyone who wants to know how to build things!) and I’d like to offer you the opportunities to pursue these skills through UASEDS.

Thank you,

Joel Mueting

Eric Sahr

My name is Eric Sahr and I am the current President of UASEDS. I have been an officer in this club for two years (one as Trip Coordinator and most recently as President). I’ve learned a lot about this position and that’s why I’m seeking re-election. Throughout this year I’ve noticed a number of things about the way we currently run the club that I think should be changed or updated to better reflect the club’s current position.
I’d like to increase our club’s emphasis on various projects (such as our current ASCEND! Project and microgravity proposals) while adding on other projects that people have suggested (such as building a rocket engine or producing our own space documentary). We could tap into currently unused funding sources (such as the Engineering Student Council) to make such projects a reality. Also, increased oversight of projects will ensure that they stay on track and make progress at a reasonable pace.
Additionally, I’d like to place a greater emphasis on outreach to the Tucson community, which we’ve begun this year through the addition of the new Outreach Officer position. Through these activities, we can instill a passion for space in our community’s young people. I’d also like to use our telescope out on the mall more often, in order to increase our exposure to the campus community.
If re-elected, I’d push to improve our club’s website, as it currently is not used to its full potential. I’d like to include more pertinent information on the website, such as the current status of projects (in a blog format), upcoming events, club history, and how to join. Also, we could use a private wiki to maintain a database of our contacts at various places that we visit, to ensure that future generations of SEDS clubs get the same opportunities that we do.
Lastly, I’ve begun a month-by-month outline of a schedule for next year, to make certain we meet all of our goals that we set for next year get met.

Treasurer

My name is Ellen Thomas and I am currently a junior getting my BS in psychology. The upcoming school year will be my fourth year in SEDS. As some of you may know, I am currently the treasurer for SEDS. In the past year I have taken full responsibility of our snack stores; the one in our office and the one in the LPL department in the Kuiper building. I also organized a successful fundraiser at Jamba Juice last semester. The money we made from the snack stores (in addition to our Space Grant funds) was able to help send 12 members to Space Vision and 16 members on a spring break trip to California this past year. In addition to my term in SEDS as treasurer I was also the treasurer for my high school yearbook for two years, and treasurer for student council in the eighth grade. If I were to be reelected, I would continue to make sure the snack store is always stocked with food, and organize more fundraisers such as percentage nights, car washes or bake sales on the mall. I also plan to open a third snack store: on the second floor of the Sonnet building. Thank you,

Ellen Thomas

Sean Gellenbeck

Hello everyone. My name is Sean Gellenbeck and I am an Aerospace Engineering major. I have been involved in SEDS since my freshman year and now, I am running for Treasurer and Trip Coordinator for the 2012-2013 academic year.
During my time in our club, I have been to many of the events and on many of the trips and these are some of the most memorable times I have had both as a member and of college in general. As trip coordinator, I will strive to ensure that this true for other members. With this, I plan to have our club return to many of the favorite spots that we often frequent including the LBT, Titan Missile Museum, and Pima Air and Space as well as increase the number of “bonding” trips such as camping and star parties in order to give our members more time to get to know each other. Of course the largest responsibility of the trip coordinator is to plan the annual Spring Break trip. I have been on this trip the last two years and as a result know how the experience can be improved. Some of my plans include securing physical maps for drivers in addition to directions, trying to limit driving time while still maintaining the number of tours, and of course finding the best and most memorable destinations for us to visit.
Of course doing all these fun things requires funding as do many of the projects and other events our club supports. Over the last three years, I have seen SEDS grow and become what I feel is one of the best clubs on campus and I would like to see that growth continue. As treasurer, I will increase our fundraising efforts in order to fuel this continued growth and increase in number of projects and events. I have many ideas of how to accomplish this including more snack store locations, pursuing other departmental and ASUA funding, and percentage nights. Obviously this takes many man-hours in order to do which is why I plan to include general members in our club’s fundraising endeavors.
If I am elected to an office, I will not only satisfactorily complete my own responsibilities but will work with the other officers in an effort to improve and expand the work done by our club.
If you have any questions, I would be happy to answer them and can be reached at gellenbs@email.arizona.edu. Thank you for your consideration and I hope to receive your vote!

Eric Sahr

If elected Trip Coordinator, I would build upon my experience as Trip Coordinator and President to maintain the high quality of trips that our club has had in the past. While we frequently visit interesting places, there are other places around Tucson that we have not visited as a club in a very long time (or not at all in some cases) such as Kitt Peak, Mount Lemmon, Raytheon, Paragon Space Development Corporation and many others. I would also be sure to plan out an excellent Spring Break trip to locations that we have not visited in the past while keeping costs to our club low.

Ian Cates

If elected trip coordinator I will do my best make all SEDS trips as fun as possible. To make sure this happens I will actively listen to all members of the club so that all interests are represented. I will also do my best to make sure the cost of the trips are as low as possible. So please elect me and we will have many fun trips that will create lifelong memories.

Communications

Danny Pagano
Goals
After my first year as Communications Officer I’ve noticed several key areas that need fine tuning. As Communications officer I’d like to optimize the ways we interact with those outside the club. I think the best way to do this is to update our website, club “branding” and increase our social media presence and traffic. In the past year we’ve made a couple steps in the right direction by updating our t-shirt design and reliably posting minutes to the website. Summer will be an opportunity to formulate a plan of attack before it is put into action during the year. I hope that you’ll let me maintain the momentum we’ve built up so far.
Experience
Communications officer, UASEDS, 2011-2012
Created several posters in an attempt to update our club’s public appearance. Additionally designed T-shirts with the same goal in mind. Utilized twitter, facebook, and photo updates via flickr to publicize club events. Recorded meeting minutes at both officer and general body meetings which were uploaded to our club website.
ASCEND! Team Member, UASEDS, 2011-2012
Launched and recovered two high altitude weather balloon payloads. One studied the affect of atmospheric density on detection of sound waves in the audible range. The second contained a cosmic ray scintillation detector to study frequency of cosmic ray impacts as a function of altitude to determine their effects on the health of airline pilots and passengers.
Nanosatellite business lead, uaseds, 2011-2012
Organizing the Business Plan and Fundraising workgroup for UASEDS Nano Satellite project. Duties involve scheduling of meetings, delegation of assignments, contacting potential sponsors. The Nano Satellite project will be a student designed and fundraised satellite in Low Earth Orbit, once completed
ClearSkies business plan, UASEDS, 2011-present
Consulted during the writing of a business plan which proposed the creation of a satellite grid to remove space debris from important orbits. The business plan took 2nd place over teams from Johns Hopkins and Purdue Universities. Judged by representatives from Virgin Galactic, Altius Space Machines, Morgan Stanley and others.
Student validator, HiRise, 2012-present
Studying
University of Arizona, Interdisciplinary Studies: Photography Journalism, Marketing — 2013
Skills
Passionate about science and technology, as well as art and design. Interpersonal and writing skills add depth to this mix, and allow verbal and written avenues of communication to a degree which focuses on relaying information to others in a succinct and engaging manner.

Hello all,

My name is Kate Li and I am running for the positions of Communications Officer and Outreach Coordinator. I want to be an officer in SEDS because SEDS is my favorite club on campus. Never have I been in a club that has shown such dedication to providing opportunities to its members – in the forms of numerous projects, engaging field-trips, and meaningful outreach activities. The things that we do in SEDS and the camaraderie that exists when such a great group of people come together are things that are – quite frankly – priceless and rare in a club, and I want to be a part of what makes this group great! My primary goals if elected would be to encourage greater membership and more involvement opportunities for those who are already members. This means coordinating even more outreach opportunities with local high schools and elementary schools, as well as partnering up with other clubs on campus. I would be accessible and prompt. Most of all, however, I am happy to know that whoever wins any of the elections this cycle will do a phenomenal job as officer. It has been such an honor and joy getting to know all of you! I would be honored to serve with such fantastic people!

With the establishment of the outreach position in UASEDS, a door opens for a great opportunity to both help the students at the U of A and the Tucson community understand the importance of space and space related endeavors. My goal as the Outreach Director of UASEDS will be to make sure that the importance of space is projected to the community through a variety of different programs and events that emphasize space. To name a few…

1. Monthly/Semesterly Star Gazing: We welcome UA students, faculty members, employees, and the Tucson community to enjoy the experience of seeing the stars that originally sparked the curiosity of what could be out there. This would be both a recruiting event for new SEDS members and a way to set up our name for events to come during the semester.

2. UASEDS Space Science Day: At this event, we would welcome students onto our campus to explore the relationship that we as members have with space by providing them with workshops and presentations that I imagine would be like taking a more in-depth tour of a planetarium. This would be a big endeavor however, which opens up the opportunity for SEDS to collaborate with other clubs to organize the event and possibly utilizing Flandrau Science Center as sub-venue for the event. The target audience for this event would be middle school aged children.

3. UASEDS Space Science Fair: A culmination of high-school aged student research on a space related topic will be presented in “grand” fashion to a panel of judges at an end-of-the-year science fair. The target group for this event would be graduating seniors from Tucson area high schools. As a reward for the top research projects, there would be scholarships for their journey into higher education. Small presentations and a keynote speaker would also be scheduled at this event all of which would be open to the public

4. Other: I state other here because as we have seen this year, outreach opportunities arise that we can take advantage of when they come along. For example, Yuri’s Night and our soon to be elementary school outreach.

As you can see, this is quite an ambitious agenda to accomplish in just one year and seemingly impossible for just one person to do. However, these high goals allow for the most important part of my hopes for outreach, and that is involving all of our members to help aid in the planning and execution of these events through event committees. Members would have the opportunity to help plan each outreach event, and be a critical part of its execution such as being a workshop leader, giving a presentation, or being the person who helps make everything run smoothly. Without you, these goals will be difficult to accomplish, and I want the members to have ownership in everything we do.

Thank you and good luck to everyone,

Dana Cordova

Carmen Austin, Astronomy major:

I want to hold the outreach officer

position because I love being a part of SEDS, I want to make sure we
do more outreach in the coming year, and mostly because space science
outreach is my choice of career. We’ve done pretty good in the past
couple of months, but overall the past year has been lacking a bit
when it comes to outreach. I want to see us do more. I’ve been doing
volunteer outreach for both SEDS and Astronomy Club for the past 3 and
a half years, I’ve worked in an education and public outreach job at
NOAO for the past 2 years, and I’m handy with a telescope. Through
volunteering and my job I’ve done all kinds of space science
activities with public of all ages, and many backgrounds, and I’ve
spent hundreds of hours using telescopes. I’m also one of the group
that’s been working on improving our own telescope, and I will be
certified on it soon. My goals for UASEDS outreach are to have at
least one event to volunteer at per month, to add a few more space
science activities to our repertoire, and to make sure every one is
getting involved in outreach. It may not always be possible to have an
event per month, but that’s what I’ll shoot for. I don’t want to
pester people, but I will try to pay attention to which active members
are and are not participating in outreach, and at least encourage
those who aren’t to get involved somehow. I know I can do what I’ve

mentioned here, and many other good things for UASEDS.

Name: Amanda Urquiza
Class Standing: Junior
Major: Math/Studio Art
Platform:

One way or another, everyone in this club got turned on to space and the sciences whether it had been looking through a telescope or seeing a rocket launch for the first time, picking up Hawking’s A Brief History of Time, or waking up early to watch Bill Nye the Science Guy.
Whatever it was that got us to become the space geeks that we are, with outreach we can return the favor done to us. It’s for this reason that I am running for the Outreach position.

I believe my fervor for volunteer work, commitment to exciting everyone I meet about space, and dedication to goals I set are what make me a great candidate.
I have many contacts at elementary, middle, and high schools around Tucson and will coordinate monthly educational outreach events.

The great thing about outreach is that it can be facilitated through SEDS projects and events such as club promotion, fundraising, and club projects:

While reaching out to younger students at local schools is imperative, there is also the importance of reaching out to our own classmates on campus. As Outreach officer, I will team up with the Communications officer to engage students on campus through activities such as World Space Week and Yuri’s Night.

Outreach and fundraising go hand in hand. As Outreach officer, I will collaborate with the Treasurer to get a SEDS booth at the annual Spring Fling.

During outreach, it is important to emphasize tangible and real results to ignite the outreach experience. A great way to do this is by showcasing experiments and projects that club teams and individual members have been working on.

To conclude, staying true to the SEDS motto, focusing the enthusiasm of young people is the key to our future in space. Thank you.

Technology

Name: Erik Wise

Class Standing: Freshman

Major: Materials Science

Platform:

Last semester, the previous Technology Officer, Nathan Mogk, was the one who effectively convinced me to join SEDS. In the time since I’ve come to be quite active in club events, taking part on both of our massive road trips as well as caving, game nights, and finally SEDS projects. That’s my biggest concern I have running for the Technology Officer, what will future SEDS projects be, are we losing ones we have, can we get more, etc. With the risk of losing Acsend! in the future, which I sadly missed out on this year, I think that we need to find more possibilities for SEDS. Whether they be smaller, less intensive projects, or similar in scope and size to the longterm Nano-Sat project, my goal is to keep SEDS working on /something/.

Also, I have years of computer experience, familiarity with Windows and Unix OS’s, and a JTED certified webpage designer (Less impressive than it sounds). As Technology officer I would make a concerted effort to get any and all computers in the SEDS office running again, possibly replaced from other departments. In addition to replacing the computers, I would be more than capable to change anything that needs to be done to the UA SEDS website.

Thank you,

Erik Wise

Dana Cordova, Junior, Aerospace Engineering w/ Planetary Science minor

We live in an age where we literally run on technology. From our phones to our computers, there is not a day where we go without it. However, technology becomes outdated quite fast nowadays, and, from what I’ve seen in the SEDS office, our computers are no exception. So, I feel it is time for an update. It is my goal as the technology officer of UASEDS to either a) refurbish, clean, and update the computers in the SEDS office so that they meet the standards of our go-go life or b) actively seek out “new” (either bought used or donated) computers and technology tools to help aid in our technological needs.
I also plan to make the website more “inviting,” and by this I mean lets excite people about what we are doing. We can have member biographies that explain who we are as a club and show them the projects we are working on, or to points of interest that we concern ourselves with. Enabling a forum for outreach events and trips is a crucial part I would like to establish as it makes it not only easier to know what’s going on, but also to see who is doing what and unites us as a club in a more intimate sense. These are just a few thing I feel I could get done as the technology officer, but I am here to meet your needs, so I would be working closely with the members to make sure all of our technological needs are met.

Name: Andrew McGuckin

Class Standing: Sophomore (will be a junior)

Major: Aerospace Engineering

Platform:

Hello everyone, my name is Andrew McGuckin and I’m running for the technology officer position. I’m a good candidate for this position not only because of my experience with technology, but also because I’m a responsible person you can trust to be a good officer. Since joining SEDS in my freshman year, I have been involved in everything from helping to repair the telescope to taking part in the annual spring break trip. Furthermore, I have experience in the role of a club officer, serving as treasurer of my high school’s FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) chapter, secretary of my high school’s scholastic bowl club, and, most recently, vice president of the university’s flying club this past semester. As for my technology experience, I have taken many courses related to computers, networking, and programming and have even built a computer before.

My plan for the upcoming semester is to keep things running smoothly behind the scenes when it comes to the technology in the office, and one of my goals is to get all three computers into full working condition, as well as looking into possible upgrades.
